As we approach the end of the year, many of us start reflecting on our goals for 2025. We often think about what we want to start doing: eating healthier, drinking less, and perhaps working differently. However, research suggests that these resolutions often don’t last. So, I want to pose a different question: What am I going to stop doing in 2025? What will I say no to? What boundaries will I set for myself?
I’ve been contemplating this, and it’s a challenging but important exercise. The first thing I want to stop doing is undervaluing my time. I need to appreciate the expertise and value I bring to my family, clients, and community. I want to break the habit of constantly checking my phone during idle moments and stop mindlessly snacking between meetings. I also want to stop being as critical to myself and be kinder- coaching myself and my kids, appreciating our efforts more.
Setting these boundaries will create space for positive habits and energy to flourish. Another area I want to address is my tendency to work in the business rather than on it. How can I transition from being on the playing field to the coach’s box, spending more time leading versus doing? As leaders, building our awareness of the balance between doing and leading.
One thing to consider for your stop list is to stop constantly doing and start leading from the coach’s box. This perspective allows us to see the bigger picture and be more effective in our leadership roles.
Sometimes, the energy we need is to simply be, rather than do. In this state of being, we can access the innovation and creativity within us. By stopping certain behaviours, we can unlock new ideas and improve our efficiency and effectiveness.
As we wrap up 2024, it’s easy to focus on what we want to start doing. I encourage you to have that start list, but also think about what you want to continue doing. Most importantly, take time to ponder what you will stop doing.
